New Thought Conference Explores Divine Life and Spiritual Living

Spiritual Director Tim Peterson promotes dynamic inclusion through NewThoughtCanada.org

7th Annual Canadian New Thought Conference

Ernest Holmes founded the Church of Religious Science

Heart, Mind and Soul are opened to the light of Science and debate at unique conference in the Heart of Canada.

We believe ... that any person may become a revealer of Truth who lives in close contact with the indwelling God.
— Ernest Holmes
EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA, April 2, 2014 /NewThoughtNews.com/ -- Taking shape in the heart of Canada is what many might call an extraordinary conference due to its combination of Neuroscience, Spirituality and the Human Potential Movement. Instead of disagreement and conflict over concepts of theology, or spirit versus science, people from diverse fields are discussing possibilities. Some are calling themselves "possibilitarians", others "mental scientists" and still others are calling themselves Divine Adventurers. Preparations for the conference are punctuated by individual discussions between local geologists, physicists, artists, musicians and people from all parts of the New Thought "movement". Often as not, one will see, or occasionally hear Edmonton Spiritual Director Tim Peterson encouraging such debate and even adding to the dialogue with humour and insight.

Peterson is a man with great vision and many talents. To some he is an oil man, an expert in rigging and lifting essential to the local petroleum industry. To others he is a visionary who sees a higher truth in which science and spirituality not only converge but merge into a finer understanding of life and love lived with joy. Still others see him as the man with answers, a consultant and advisor, but on these days of preparation most people call him "Rev." or "Rev. Tim". Tim is not only unafraid of debate about spiritual, scientific and life issues, he encourages it. (http://is.gd/XJTlEm)

This is the nature of New Thought. As Tim and his team of brilliant colleagues prepare for the Annual New Thought Conference, the air is always filled with interesting discussions. A young woman with bright red hair says "Mental Science is the basis of all personal evolution, 'spirituality' is simply positive emotional consistency.” An answer or comment comes from an older man with bright blue eyes across the room: "the entire universe is energy. God is the deeper and higher core of this energy. We are each a microcosm of a greater whole." www.NewThought.net

All of this is taking place at the Centre for Spiritual Living Edmonton Metro, which when seen on a map, (https://goo.gl/maps/K2u9E) appears to be in the heart of Edmonton, which is in the heart of Alberta, in the heart of Canada. Heart, within heart, within heart might explain why the theme of this Annual New Thought Conference is "Heart and Soul, Deepening in Spirit". The front page of www.SpiritualEvolution.ca promises that one will find a "warm, accepting group of people who, like you, are seeking a community within which to celebrate....”

Deeper within the website www.SpiritualEvolution.ca/beliefs/, one finds an eloquently written text called "What We Believe" by Ernest Holmes which contains the statement: "We believe in the direct revelation of Truth through the intuitive and spiritual nature of the individual, and that any person may become a revealer of Truth who lives in close contact with the indwelling God. We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operates through a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that we are surrounded by the Creative Mind which receives the direct impress of our thought and acts upon it." www.ErnestHolmes.info

Joining this "Core Council", people from different New Thought Centres and traditions (www.NewThought.info) offer their contribution to the preparations for the conference fueling discussion with "Chocolate Dream Lattes" in red Tim Hortons cups. These "Dreams" are universally proclaimed by the imbibers to be vastly superior to coffee concoctions from south of the border. The "dream drinks" move the discussions to the musical power of the didgeridoo and whether "circular breathing" is a deeper meditation that brings about an alternate reality. "Breathe is the mother of all meditation" proclaims someone in the now expanded team. "I prefer mantra" declares another. Discussion ensues about the biology of language with references to Noam Chomsky, "Victor of Aveyron" Jodi Foster's movie: "Nell". Talk turns to using verses from the bible (a method strongly preferred by the UFBL participants) versus mantras from other traditions. Two mantras stand out: "Om mani padme hum" and "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo".

The Unity folks talk of the "Atom Smashing Power of the Mind". This is enfolded into the ongoing discussion, intermingled with "Lessons in Truth" woven into String Theory, sprinkled with "particles versus waves" finally arriving at the "singularity". The Singularity being discussed is sometimes technological, sometimes gravitational, but always motivational. One might think that these different groups would argue, but they don't. They are all united in the understanding that through the power of "right thinking" one can create a better life.

Many participants share an experience of having found their "spiritual home". This is often supported with a story about the person's journey through difficult experiences to arrive at their New Thought Centres. The Unity person feels he has finally found a Christian path that is not only uplifting but makes sense. This is echoed by someone from the "Universal Foundation for Better Living". (www.UFBL.org) A person who identifies as a "Religious Scientist", relates an extraordinary journey through temples and spiritual centres around the globe culminating in a spiritual home that does not deny science.

All the talk of science, psychology and metaphysics seems to have scared away the fundamentalists and Scientologists. Asking about this prompts: "This wouldn't be their cup of tea", followed by laughter, then a dramatic emphasis that "They are not 'New Thought'" and "neither are the Christian Scientists." This moves the discussion onto New Thought History and a book called "Spirits in Rebellion". The title conjures up the "Game of Thrones", there is more laughter followed by unanimous agreement that Peter Dinklage's Tyrion Lannister is one of the greatest characters of all time.
